“I wanna wake up with the rain
falling on a tin roof
while I’m safe there in your arms
so all I ask is for you
to come away with me in the night.”

– Nora Jones

Singleton – November 1997

Alison didn’t know if it was good or bad timing when Camilla and she had their threesome chat because just a few days later she had to go away to Singleton army base as a medic to support a Cadet Camp. She wasn’t sure whether her sudden absence would cause Camilla to have second thoughts.

Alison also found that she was juggling an increasing number of commitments and was feeling overwhelmed. Between university, Christian, army, sport and her jobs, Alison never had a moment’s rest. Her mother was constantly reminding her of the importance of her study, which Alison read as, dump your boyfriend. But Alison’s stubborn side told her she could do it all. After all, her mother had always told her that Alison could achieve anything if she set her mind to it.

So it was with some relief that she went to the camp. She would have less in her face pressure, she could not work or see Christian, and with exams fast approaching, her down time would give the opportunity she needed to catch up on her neglected study.

She’d agreed to support the camp six months earlier, thinking that it would be a way to get paid some extra cash. Christian hadn’t been on the scene then, so now she regretted her earlier decision even though she needed to catch up on her study. She would only miss one or two visits with him, but each one was so precious. Alison even felt the loss when she didn’t see him for a couple of days.

Alison got by on the camp with study and a letter that Christian had sent her, but after a week, she was going a little stir crazy with only a couple of doctors and 500 teenagers for company. She entered such a funk that she stopped studying and felt depressed that she couldn’t see Christian.

As a tourist destination, the Infantry Centre at Singleton also left a lot to be desired, at the least the part Alison got to see. There were still plenty of WWII-built accommodation and shower blocks within the army system and that is where they stuck anyone at a camp who was not a regular soldier. Wooden sheds and corrugated iron clad shower blocks were as basic as you could imagine, but it was still marginally better than sleeping in the dirt. Funny how that in the middle of some of the country’s greatest wine and agricultural country, the army had still managed to build a complete shit hole.

She could call him from the base payphone but, unless she could find a time when she could be alone then, they couldn’t do much more than make small talk and update each other on their days. But when Alison reached her lowest ebb on day nine, Christian’s second letter arrived.

Alison had left for Singleton a week after Bondi, and Christian knew he wouldn’t get to see her for about 20 straight days. But as he was leaving to drive home that weekend, Alison had pressed a note into his hand and told him not to read it till he had arrived home. When he pulled into his driveway, Christian opened the note and read.

I like the idea of being controlled. If you have any desire to tie me down onto any surface and have wild, exhausting sex with me, I can’t say that I would disagree.

As much as she wanted him to, Christian couldn’t tie her down and fuck her over the land line to Singleton. He would also admit that he found the idea of bondage somewhat creepy. He wasn’t comfortable at that stage, with that line of activity escalating much beyond simple restraint.

He was, however, beginning to get on board with the idea of control and direction. They’d already showed that we were both into that at Bondi. But Christian thought it wouldn’t hurt to test the waters again by writing a fantasy piece for Alison to read while she was away on camp and see what she thought of it:

How to make the perfect gin martini

(Makes two drinks)

Cracked ice

5 Ounces of Tanqueray 10 dry gin

1 Ounce of Noilly Prat dry vermouth

6 Sicilian olives for garnish

1 Little black cocktail dress

1 Pair black stockings

1 Black or white tuxedo, depending on the season

1 Copy of Come Away with Me by Norah Jones

Dressed in your little black dress and stockings, move to the bar whilst your gentleman turns on the music. Direct your gentleman to sit in a comfortable chesterfield chair, positioned to view you mixing the drinks. In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine gin and vermouth. Stir well, then strain into two martini glasses. Garnish with olives.

Hand the glass to your gentleman, ensuring that, whilst doing so, you brush his hand with your fingers. Repose yourself opposite and drink slowly. When track eight: Lonestar begins, pause the conversation for 10 seconds and make full eye contact. Finish your drink in one sip, then stand up and remove your dress. Cross slowly to your gentleman and sit on his lap facing him. Sip once from his glass and place it back down. Remove his bow tie.

Enjoy.
