This is the story of Christian and Alison, two former lovers who are reunited twenty years after their earlier split. Alison has ticked all the boxes in her life achievements, education, career and family. But her impending divorce has shattered her world. Though she won’t yet admit it, her meeting with Christian is an attempt by her to understand where her life started to go off the rails.
Between bouts of love making, Alison asks Christian to tell her what happened to him between when she left until now. Christian revels his life in a series of long story flashbacks.
First, Christian relays the story of his journey to East Timor and his eventual triumph as a minor celebrity. However, he neglects to tell Alison that at the end of that story he bumps into her former flatmate and their mutual paramour, Camilla.
We learn of Christian and Camilla’s relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown back together. Their relationship remained a secret to all but them but how long can either last?
As Alison looks to recapture her youthful indiscretion, she attempts phone sex with Christian from her workplace. For Christian’s part he goes on to tell Alison of his drive across Australia and his unexpected rendezvous with history on the MV Tampa. But Alison’s plan goes awry and she is forced to desperately seek out the last person who can save her; her estranged husband Henry.
At Henry’s house Alison makes a discovery which paves the way for Christian travel to see her in her hometown for the first time. On arriving, he shares with her photos from their time together decades earlier. She comments on one photo that leads Christian to tell the story of his time in South America.
As Alison listens, she becomes enraged and sets about seeking revenge in the only way she knows how. Emboldened by her desire to break out of her lifestyle and recover her sense of self, she makes a movie with Christian but keeps her reasons for it to herself.
