My motto’s always been ‘when it’s right, it’s right’

why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
When everything’s a little clearer in the light of day
Sydney – July 1997
Alison worked at a bakery on Sunday mornings. She reluctantly slid out of bed at 4am, leaving a naked and warm Christian behind her to sleep in her lingering warmth. She silently cursed her student’s schedule, but knew that she wouldn’t be letting him go home without at least one more tumble. Christian had said that when she went to work, he would take care of himself and go out shopping in town. Self-reliant; an essential trait all too often lacking in some. He ticked another box.
By the time that Christian returned to Alison’s flat at lunchtime, she was already home. He kept his promise, and they walked over to the Sydney Cricket Ground, a kilometre away, so he that could take her to the football. It was a pleasant change of pace and a good day to be out in the sunshine.
They walked to the ground through Centennial Park and sat behind the goals at the southern end in the sun of a warm winter afternoon. It was sunny enough that Alison wore a white singlet. Christian told her that her look -white singlet and Ray-bans–was a tremendous turn on for him so she promised to wear it again.
As they sat in the sun, Christian rubbed sunscreen into Alison’s arms and neck. That gave them an excuse to caress a little in public with no disapproving looks. She sat back, thinking her life couldn’t get any better. Neither of them cared about the game or the result. They were having their first proper date, and it gave them each a chance to recharge their batteries and rest their weary bodies.
Afterward they walked home along ANZAC Parade, Alison pointing out her old high school. When they were almost home she pulled him into the grass near the park for a mid-walk cuddle.
They got straight down to business when they got back to the flat. Christian rolled her onto her side and entered Alison from on top. He was so deep into her she could feel him right up to her belly button. She couldn’t believe his penetration. He was so deep that each one of his thrusts caused her to let out a little sigh.
Finally, they snuck into the showers past Alison’s unsuspecting flatmates. Christian had just stepped into the end stall when Alison, wearing just a towel, bumped into Camilla, who had emerged unexpectedly from the neighbouring stall. After not seeing her all weekend, Camilla commented on the huge grin on Alison’s face.
Teasing her, Camilla asked, “Having a good weekend?”
Alison looked sideways; her eyes looking toward the end shower stall. “I’ll tell you later.”
Christian finally departed and drove back to Canberra on Sunday night. During his journey, he replayed the entire weekend in his head repeatedly. Every minute of that weekend had been a dream. How had he gone from the pit of despair to the heights of ecstasy in a week? Knowing that something life changing had just happened, he resolved to record the events for posterity; however, it played out. As soon as he got home, he grabbed a pen and started writing everything down. And when he finished, he also wrote Alison a letter.
As Alison lay in the scene of their love, she could only remember as far back as one week before. Reflecting, she thought that when she awoke in the cold, damp and dark of that penultimate night of the camp, all she was wishing for was a warm shower, a soft bed and to be home. She didn’t know that, despite never speaking to him, she had already fallen for Christian. A week later she was clean, warm and home but utterly exhausted and sore and yet smiling so much it hurt. This hadn’t just been a dirty weekend. She had to have more.
